I love this concept!! I've been trying to work on this too, without the cool name. Do you tend to keep your portfolio to five things? I'm brainstorming what mine would be, but having a hard time narrowing it down!

I'm so glad it resonates, Maryn! I'd say you can have whatever number you like :) But I do prefer to be able to rattle the projects off the top of my head, so sticking to 5 or fewer helps. And more importantly, it also helps with not spreading myself too thin! I do have smaller "projectlets" like gardening in the summer, but to me it doesn't rise to the level of the portfolio list (maybe one day it will). Of course the trick is not to have too many of those mini ones that suck up time that is better used for the official portfolio.

If it's hard to narrow down, you can also think of it as an exercise in imagination and experimentation! For example, if you picked say 5 projects from your longer list and really elevated those in your life, what would happen? What do you imagine that life would look like? Would you enjoy it? Would anything bad happen if you left the non-selected projects behind? And then what about selecting another 5? How would that life look different? Is it worth trying that life on for size for a week?

And then lastly, I suppose everyone just has a different preference for the number of things in their life! I could imagine one person that thrives on a rich variety of different smaller projects, while another might find more fulfillment in having just a few meaningful things.

I hope this helps!

Thank you so much for your beyond thoughtful response! I really appreciate the questions you posed. I'm very much a person who has many hobbies, interests, and side projects, and this is a good push to take some time to ponder about what I value most and want to dedicate my life and time to. Appreciate your insights always — looking forward to your book 😊

We have oodles of people in the future proof community who have gone to a portfolio career and life. It's a wonderful option as you navigate life's changes and allows for more flexibility as you age and naturally diversify. I think the hardest thing about it is saying no to interesting opportunities. How do you know when your portfolio is at capacity? That's definitely something I have to work on!

Thank you for the reflection! And I totally agree, it’s a luxury and a legitimate problem that sometimes there’s so much interesting work to be done with interesting people!

Hey Bree, it is a very useful idea as it gives a sense of purpose and direction.

Inspired by the #portfoliolife, here are two questions to reflect on:

+ What am I focusing on this year?

+ Why are they my priorities?

Thanks for sharing!
